The Sexy Wedding Dress

What makes a wedding dress sexy?

Everyone defines sexy differently. Most brides describe a sexy wedding dress as a low back, plunging neckline, or sheer details. During a style consultation, we always ask our clients what level of sexy or modesty they looking for. We find everyone has their own definition of what is sexy and what is appropriate to wear around the grandparents. Sometimes the sexiest dresses have high necklines with sleeves. A dress doesn’t need to be see-through to be sexy. For example, the silk slip look is very in and provides that effortless, sexy feel on wedding day without being showy. We love the sexy wedding dress trend because it’s up to your interpretation and what you feel the best in.

How do you make a wedding dress sexier?

Custom changes to wedding dresses are becoming more and more popular as brides are seeing friends personalize their wedding dresses. Sometimes that dream dress isn’t hanging on the rack. Maybe it’s a simple change to the neckline or removing the sleeves to make a wedding dress sexier. Our bridal boutique is known for our custom changes. We encourage them! More than half of the changes are done through the designer and the other changes are done with the in-house seamstress.

Recommendations to make a wedding dress sexier.

  1. Lower the neckline

  2. Remove the sleeves

  3. Remove lining from the bodice and create a floating appliqué look

  4. Lower the backline. Make sure you don’t need the bust support.

  5. Tailor the skirt in more to make it more of a mermaid wedding dress fit

  6. Wear it with confidence!

  7. Change the lining to nude

How do you wear the see-through wedding dresses?

We know when this question is coming. As guests explore our Orlando bridal shop, we can see the reaction on their faces when they stumble on a see-through wedding dress. Many see-through wedding dresses are designed to be sexy; however, they are not meant to be naked. The designers have carefully placed the lace appliqués where they need to be in order to provide coverage and a sexy look at the same time. We recommend giving one “see-through” dress a shot. They tend to be very flattering because they aren’t bulky. We always joke with our guests that we can make the dresses as conservative as a turtle neck. When a bride is trying on a see-through dress, we will often add appliqués until the coverage is just right. Also, we can always show you the dress with lining on the bodice or skirt and you can decide how you wish to wear the dress.

How do you wear a sexy wedding dress and still support your bust?

Queue over honest Wedding Fashion Stylist! We cannot stress enough how important it is to work with someone who will take the time to explain how the dress will fit once it’s been ordered for you and tailored to your body. We are all beautifully different and because of that sometimes a custom change to give you the right support is everything! If I have a bride looking for a plunging neckline with an open back, and she is a “C” or fuller, we need to have a quick chat. We all like to wear things differently. First we would love to hear if you are someone that loves bras and likes that extra structure. Or maybe you are living your best life in your bralettes and sports bras. This will give us a guide on your expectation of the fit of the dress. If you love bras and love having your bust up and lifted, then we may suggest raising the backline just a little or adding some boning on the sides. It doesn’t mean you can’t wear your dream dress, it’s just means a little modification will give you the gift of not feeling like you have to tug at your dress all night.

Oh and the mesh, it’s everything. I’m not referring to the bad stuff. I’m referring to the soft, stretchy, skin matching mesh. There is a lot of bad mesh out there that gives mesh wedding dresses a bad wrap. The good quality mesh allows you to have that plunging neckline and the low back while still supporting your bust. This is a very different feel than a dress with a completely open back causing an ill fit in the front.

What shapewear is best to wear under a sexy wedding dress?

We love us some shapewear! Again, another piece that receives a bad wrap. The right shapewear, in the right size can solve a lot of concerns. To smooth, we use a controlling natural waist Spanx. This works for any low back as long as it doesn’t go lower than the waistline. If your low back is lower than your waistline, we can add a floating appliqué to camouflage the Spanx. On occasion, we have added a lycra like material to the skirt instead of spanx. This gives you that nice control and stretchy feel and works well for a very low back dress.

For bust support, we can sew in cups and add side boning to the wedding dress. Another option are stickies. We have tested all the options on the market and are always on the search for new options. Ideally you are looking for a bust sticky you can pull your bust up in. During alterations we get creative and have boob tape and then did a sticky on top of it. A bridal stylist will be able to tell you prior to buying the dress how much bust support the dress will give you with shapewear on. It may come down to doing a combination of things: raising the backline 1/2 an inch, raising the neckline a 1/2 an inch, adding boning to the sides, and wearing bust stickies. This is all the more reason to work with a knowledgeable Wedding Fashion Stylist!

Spanx vs. Skims

Lately, a lot of brides have asked our opinions on Spanx vs Skims. Skims are a brand new line of shape wear created by Kim Kardashian. Skims offers the ‘sculpt low back short’ which dips in the back. In theory, this is perfect if your dress sits low on your body and you need the control in the front. However, they are not as comfortable as Spanx are. Skims also have boning which could potentially show through, depending on how tight your dress is around your outer thighs.

It’s all about your personal preference. We have had brides bring in Skims and love them! We recommend trying on all of your undergarments with your dress and moving around to ensure you are comfortable on your wedding day.

Let us know if you use Spanx or Skims!
